The Begging Bowl – Peckham Thai

On Saturday, Alex and I met up with a few friends for lunch at what can only be described as the hottest new Thai restaurant in South London (maybe even in the whole of London, but I’m no Thai food expert)! I’ve been dying to get to The Begging Bowl in Peckham since it opened about five weeks ago, as it just so happens that the chef and part-owner is none other than one of our tremendously talented friends Jane. I actually hired Jane a few years ago, to teach Alex the basics of cooking – Unfortunately I missed a trick, as I didn’t get her to teach him all the basics of Thai food cooking and I’m guessing there will be no time for that now!

The Begging Bowl serves tapas-style dishes within four different price ranges – From £5.50, £7.50 and £9.50, up to £12.50. They offer unlimited amounts of Jasmine and sticky rice to accompany the dishes and have an extensive wine and beer list, as well as a few cocktails which I rather foolishly forgot to test out.

The seating is a casual affair, no reservations, with tables for two and then larger tables where people can mingle with others or dine out in larger groups. Going in groups is a fab idea for this place, as you can order practically everything from the menu and have a little taste of it all, as you don’t want to be missing out on a single dish!

I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to deal with the food when one of our friends hit me with the fact that it would all be pretty hot and spicy. I’m a bit of a spice lightweight, you see. As the dishes started rolling in I did feel some initial heat burn, but it truly wasn’t anything too intense once you got used to it and as the flavours were so astoundingly good I kept going back for more, even when I was tearing up with the hottest of them all!

We were there on a Saturday afternoon and the place was pretty packed early on with children and adults alike enjoying the food. I hear from a good source that on Thursday to Saturday evenings, the place is literally heaving with people queuing to get in – With already established regulars and new customers loving this new addition to the area. Never fear though, If you can’t get in on arrival, you can simply pop across the road for a drink, your phone number will be taken and you will be called when a table is ready. Fabulous!

I suppose you could think that it is extremely easy for me to gush about how fantastic this place is because my friend is the chef – I promise you that if it was average, I’d probably just not blog about it at all.  The Begging Bowl absolutely needs to be paid a visit and you’d better get there nice and early to avoid the queues that are already forming down the road. I could also bang on about how great the service was, but you’d probably think I got something special there too – I didn’t and it was great. Go see for yourself… I’ll be going back without a doubt.

I’m pretty annoyed with myself as I forgot my camera again, but here are the best from Alex’s trusty iPhone…

That looks and sounds amazing. I haven’t found a really good Thai place here yet, but this has inspired me to search harder.

The best Thai I’ve had in London so far… and love the tapas style servings. Lemongrass martini’s next time!

I’ve never had tapas style Thai! I’ll have to bookmark this for my next trip to London. (Um, lemongrass martinis? Hope you report back on cocktails!)
