I love a felicitous coincidence and the other week a rather lovely one occurred…
I’ve been pretty uninspired to cook recently. When we are busy with work, going to the supermarket and planning meals for the week falls low on our to-do list. I mentioned to Alex that I would love for someone to do my shopping for me, deliver it to my door and provide the recipes. I literally couldn’t believe my luck, when a week later, an email arrived from Hello Fresh asking if I’d like try out their company, which offers that exact same service. Marvelous!
The concept is pretty simple (but genius) – Once you have selected your meal plan on their site, you just sit and wait. A team of chefs work away to create healthy recipes that are quick and easy to make and then the shopping is done. Ingredients of the highest quality are sourced from high-end suppliers, including meat from butchers in Smithfield Market. Then every Tuesday between 3pm and 8pm, the food is delivered to your door.
When my box arrived last week, I was majorly excited. I love parcels, and I definitely love food parcels even more! Once opened, I was more than impressed with the box I received. At the top of the box was a little chocolate gift of possibly the nicest chocolate I’ve ever tasted. All of the produce in the box was clearly above the standard of what I usually manage to source in my local supermarket. Hello Fresh even supplied a bag of ‘little bits’ containing everything from chilli seeds, ginger, right though to muscovado sugar and herbs – The exact amounts that were needed for each dish. All you need to make sure you have in your cupboards is salt, pepper, white sugar, olive oil and butter.
The recipe cards that come with your weekly box have step by step instructions and are pretty much fool proof. Unfortunately, my fool was unable to cook on either day that I was trialing the box, but I imagine that even he could make them too. Every recipe you get generally takes no longer than 30 minutes to make.. Oh, so easy!
The pricing varies between £4.30 and £4.94 per meal per person. As Hello Fresh send you the exact measurements of everything you need for each meal, this could work out a bit more pricey than your usual shop; however, in my house, I’d rather there was less food wastage in my fridge and more high quality goods in my tummy. You’d still have to do a weekly shop as you need breakfast and lunch goods, but it truly does take the strain off having to think about what you are going to cook, after a hard days work.
I like to think of myself as a good cook, but I often find myself shopping for the same foods week after week, all with the same type of flavours. I really don’t always have the time to trawl through recipe books for fresh new ideas and then list all of the ingredients for my trip to the shop. The biggest problem I find is that I often can’t get all the ingredients in one place.
I loved the fact that my Hello Fresh box recipes were so uncomplicated, but yet all so very flavoursome. The quality of each meal was like something you’d eat at an exceptionally tasty restaurant. I’ll definitely be going back for more… It’s an utterly fabulous service!
Chicken Paillard with Crushed Rosemary Potatoes, Rocket and Gremolata
Tiger Prawn Linguine with Chili and Sun-Dried Tomato
I tried to make this one without the Hello Fresh ingredients this week and it simply didn’t match up. The prawns from my supermarket made the dish far too fishy and it didn’t taste anywhere near as good.
Zesty Citrus Stir-Fry with Chicken and Ginger
As I’m allergic to wheat I substituted the pasta they gave me for my usual wheat free. This could perhaps be a bit of a problem for a few people. I’m lucky enough to be able to eat wheat/gluten products every now and then, without a bad reaction and I sadly LOVE the stuff. I’d be interested to see if any substitutes can be offered… In fact, I’ll ask and get back to you.
Hello Fresh currently deliver in the area of Greater London. If you live within the M25, they can deliver. Their first nationwide delivery will go out 12th June.
They offer options of three or five meals per week as well as vegetarian boxes.
Hello Fresh have informed me that they unfortunately can’t offer wheat free options at the moment. However, they know this an issue worth looking into and It is definitely on their list for new product developments.
