Chapter One Anniversary Dinner

Alex and I hit our eight year anniversary on Sunday, but the weekend was so jam packed with other things such as work, sleep and pet transporting that we decided to book a special dinner at Chapter One on Monday night instead. Eight years… Time certainly flies! I’d say that we’ve probably spent about six of those years driving past Chapter One saying ‘ We must go there sometime’, so at least we can now say that we have finally done it!

Chapter One is a very reasonably-priced one Michelin star restaurant in Orpington, Kent (Just a few minutes down the road from Alex’s parents house). Main courses are set at £15.95 for lunch or £20 for dinner, or if you go at this time of year you can opt for the set Christmas menu, which is £27.95 for three courses with Coffee and mince pies – Ask for the mince pies though as we left and nothing was said.

Now, the only other one Michelin star I’ve been to is Dinner with Heston and I have to say that despite the thoroughly decent grub, Chapter One really didn’t compare, for me. Yes, the food was delicious, but there was something lacking in the service and our mains could have been a little warmer.  I’ve read a few reviews stating that it’s a Michelin starred restaurant without all the fanfare, but I feel that they seem to be  struggling to find the right balance between a more relaxed service and a more formal one. It was tasty food at a good price and more importantly, the wine was much more affordable than at Heston’s (which made a huge difference)!

I’d unquestionably go back and would certainly recommend it to others (you). I wouldn’t say that it is the most romantic of places to go, but I’m happy we went and am looking forward to returning for a late Christmas dinner with Alex’s family at the end of the year.

Only a half bottle because Alex was driving…

Traditional Roast Black Feathered Turkey (Christmas set menu)

Gloucester Old Spot Pork With Granny Smith Apples, Confit Garlic

The most amazing… Smoked Potato Puree With Truffle Butter

Baked Vanilla Cheesecake with Chocolate and Hazelnut  Streusel (Part of the set Christmas menu)

Alex. Happy that I was sharing the bill, which came in at £88 inc Service. Not bad at all!
