Guilty Pleasures

I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself today. Poor me.

This morning, whilst running to the front door, I slipped and whacked my head on a ledge (big sore – ouch!). Now, if you know me you will be wondering why I was running. ‘Zoe’ and ‘run’ are not usually two words that often join together… That’s something you can usually be sure of in life. However, since we’ve moved house it seems to be a new hobby that I’ve had to take up, simply so I can make it to the front door in time when the postman calls. They don’t wait around here in Sydenham and I’ve already been told off for not making it down the stairs quickly enough. I mean it’s not their job or anything… I only live one flight up for goodness sake!

I’m also feeling sorry for myself because my home is not unpacking itself. I have toothache (on the opposite side to my head sore) and my oven still isn’t back in working action. It’s days like these that I want to bake a cake and sit and scoff the whole lot, or make myself a comforting roast dinner. Alas, no oven means no yummy baked goods. I’ve resorted to  working myself through the box of sweets and chocolates that we bought for any trick or treaters that may call this evening (obviously not helping my toothache at all).

This has to STOP!

When you work from home alone, It’s quite hard to shake off being a misery guts, but with the aid of the internet, I’ve found a few of my favourite (yet slightly embarrassing) songs that make me happy. I’m not sure why I’m sharing them, as this will most probably destroy any image I had as a reputable dance music club promoter, but what the hell…

All of the below are everything Alex hates about music – Which is actually bringing a smile to my face now, as he’ll be reading this and we all know how I aim to wind up him up!

He particularly hates this one… I imagine many people do.

Boy Meets Girl – Waiting for a Star to Fall

Winner! Phil Collins – You Can’t Hurry Love

Starship – We Built This City

What songs make you happy? How do you cheer yourself up?

If music be the food of love, play on

From Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, 1602:

DUKE ORSINO:
If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.

One of the many things Alex and I disagree on is music. In his opinion, I generally have bad taste and in my opinion, he is a music snob. I can often be found in the passenger seat of his car trying very hard not to dose off to the plinky-plonky tones of his music of choice. He is a composer and music producer and therefore I lose. I must never forget he is the driver and it is his car. I rarely win the battle of the sounds.

I know I’m a creature of habit when it comes to music – If I like it I’ll add it to my ‘play over and over again selection’ until my next few favourite albums come out and then it’s their turn for a thrashing. This is another thing that irritates Alex as he is constantly sourcing new music and moving onto the next big thing. He’s easily irritated by me it seems. A perfect match then, as I am easily irritated by him. True love.

I like most styles of music, but have never been able to wrap my ears around R&B or listen to classical for more than about five minutes before getting bored. I’m a big fan of the radio and can often be found listening to Gaydar when I’m getting ready for a night of working the guest list of clubs.  Absolute 80′s is my most recent find and I shock even myself when I discover I’m singing along to the world’s most obscure 80′s tracks!

One happy medium Alex and I have found is Funk and Disco. That we will never disagree on and I think I may have actually been the one introduce him to the sounds of Coffee and Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes… Although, he’ll NEVER admit it.

Below is a list of my top ten listened to albums on Itunes at the moment – Followed by Alex’s list. *Snore*

Fancy yourself as a DJ?

I generally like to keep anything I find online a secret for a little while before telling anyone else about it but I’ve decided this one deserves to be shared right away… If you love music and like sharing your finds with people then you should definitely check out http://turntable.fm

Apparently the site has had 140,000 active users after just one month and I can see why. I’ve been stuck in a room for a good hour making my own play list to share with others and listening to tracks I’ve never heard before. I’ve scored some lame but mostly what I heard this morning was quite good. My first selection of Tiga didn’t go down so well (you really need the video with that one) but the follow up of Danny Howells worked a treat. It’s all about finding the right room for you and you can even create a room if you don’t have to get back to work like I do!

Hope to see a few of you in there before the site gets saturated…
